Style Through Perimenopause.

Dressing for Confidence, Comfort & Change

Style Through Perimenopause

I recently learned that perimenopause — the transition phase before menopause — can begin as early as five years before your periods actually stop. I’m in the early stages of it myself, and to be honest, it’s been eye-opening. Some days I feel completely fine, and then out of nowhere comes a wave of heat that leaves me flushed and wondering what just happened.

It’s strange and fascinating at the same time — my body, which I thought I knew so well, is changing in subtle ways. Like most women, I’ve had to make small adjustments not just in how I live, but also in how I dress. Fashion, for me, has always been about self-expression and feeling good in my skin, and that hasn’t changed. If anything, this stage has made me more mindful—of comfort, fabric, and how clothes can quietly support you through transitions like these.

Navigating Unpredictable Temperatures: The Power of Breathable Fabrics

Hormonal fluctuations can make your body temperature unpredictable, so breathable fabrics have become my everyday essentials. If a fabric feels soothing when I touch it, I know it’ll make me feel good when I wear it.

Fabrics to Love: Linen, Bamboo, Modal, and Cotton

I now reach for cotton, linen, bamboo, modal, and silk because they allow the skin to breathe and help me feel comfortable through the day. I pay more attention to texture now; synthetic fabrics tend to trap heat and can make hot flashes worse, so I seek out light cotton knits, silk blends, and viscose.

Loose silhouettes like wrap dresses, soft shirts, and wide-legged trousers are my go-tos. They don’t cling to the body, yet they still feel stylish and feminine. Comfort, I’ve realised, doesn’t take away from confidence—it adds to it.

The Art of Layering: Controlling Hot Flashes with Confidence

Layering has also been a quiet game-changer for navigating those sudden temperature swings. Having a removable layer gives you flexibility, helping you feel more in control when your body suddenly decides to heat up.

Your Hot Flash Toolkit: Light Blazers, Vests, and Washable Sweat Pads

A light cardigan, linen blazer, or sleeveless vest makes all the difference. Beyond flexible layers, I've learned a few small things that help address the self-consciousness that comes with sweat patches:

  1. Fabric Choice is Key: Choose breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics like linen, bamboo, or modal—they absorb and evaporate sweat faster.
  2. Strategic Cuts: Avoid tight sleeves or fitted tops around the underarms, choosing instead relaxed cuts or sleeveless styles that let air flow easily.
  3. Disguise with Color: Mid-tone shades and prints disguise sweat marks far better than light greys or pastels.
  4. Discreet Helpers: I keep a few discreet, washable sweat pads handy.

These tiny shifts have made a big difference to how confident I feel when a hot flash hits unexpectedly.

Dressing for Body Changes: Comfort, Acceptance, and Flattering Silhouettes

Perimenopause has also taught me to stop fighting my body and start listening to it. The shape may change, but that’s no reason to hide; it’s a reason to adjust. Dressing for this stage is about acceptance, not resistance.

Embrace Flexible Fits: Elastic Waists and Wrap Details

Elastic waistbands, wrap dresses, and drawstring details have become my best friends. They move with me, not against me. When I choose comfortable clothing that flatters my evolving body, it helps me feel more grounded and beautiful.

The Psychology of Color: How to Shift Your Mood with Your Wardrobe

I truly believe what we wear can shift our mood. Color has this quiet way of anchoring or uplifting you, depending on what you need that day.

On days I crave calm, I find myself reaching for soft earthy tones—sage, blush, sand. When I need a little energy, I love the vibrancy of coral, cobalt, or emerald.

And finally, I’ve realised that confidence truly is the best thing you can wear. This stage isn’t about losing yourself; it’s about evolving into a wiser, stronger version of who you already are. Perimenopause isn’t an ending—it’s a transformation. And your wardrobe can evolve beautifully alongside you.

Dress for the woman you are today. She’s still you—just softer, wiser, and even more beautiful in her own rhythm.
